So not out of the woods yet. Running cron generates the below error with latest version
An exception occurred: [Error] Call to protected method XF\Service\Thread\Creator::setUser() from context 'XFA\XFMGMediaOfTheMonth\Service\Motm\ThreadNotifier' in...
Yes that error you reference was resolved with a patch early September so thread was auto created (in wrong forum) which is another issue I am having together with another guy on here.
Running XF2.0.10. No special caching addons using standard XF caching and session cache with a Redis backend...
My apologies I should've copied in my error I assumed it was the same but may be a different issue (though same result):
InvalidArgumentException: Attempted to convert NULL to string/binary [username]

I did run the cron manually and it didn't create anything until it ran again that evening. I still think you need to put some validation here to make sure this doesn't happen (I've historically had duplicate contest threads in XF1 because of .... no idea and definitely not running cron jobs...
Still broken in latest build, see issues:
1. I found out I have duplicate contest start threads now. You need to put some checks/validations here for dupe threads. This was an issue with the XF1 version also on occasion.
2. Another serious bug. It created the thread in a random forum (no: 3 if...
